Our purpose

Our vision is simple, but powerful: every child deserves to belong.

We envision a world where every child affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder or Sickle Cell Anemia is embraced with understanding, supported with quality care, and given an equal opportunity to live a healthy, fulfilling, and meaningful life.

Understanding the conditions

A well-informed community is the foundation of meaningful support.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, behaves, and relates to the world. Children with autism may experience challenges with spoken language, social interaction, routines, and sensory stimuli such as sound, light, or touch.

  • About 1 in 31 children aged 8 in the U.S. are identified with autism.
  • In New York, approximately 1 in 41 children are diagnosed.
  • Autism is more common in boys and is often diagnosed by age 8.

Autism is not a disease, is not contagious, and does not mean a child is broken. It means the brain is wired differently.

Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA)

Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited blood disorder present from birth. Red blood cells become rigid and crescent-shaped, making it harder for blood to flow freely. This can cause severe pain crises, chronic fatigue, frequent illness, and the need for ongoing specialized medical care.

  • Sickle cell disease affects about 100,000 people in the U.S.
  • It occurs in about 1 out of every 365 Black or African American births.
  • New York has one of the highest estimated burdens, with thousands of cases statewide.

Sickle Cell Anemia is inherited, not contagious, and with consistent care, children can live longer, healthier lives.

Care approach

Consistent, specialized support that meets children where they are.

1

Assess

Understand each child's medical, developmental, educational, and family needs.

2

Plan

Create individualized support plans shaped around strengths, risks, routines, and goals.

3

Serve

Deliver coordinated care through medical support, therapy, education, residential routines, and family guidance.

4

Review

Monitor progress, listen to families, and adjust services so support remains meaningful and effective.

Why this matters

Both conditions require consistent, specialized, and often expensive care.

Too many families with the greatest need have the least access. Children are misunderstood, stigmatized, or left without adequate medical or developmental intervention. Five Pillars is designed to close that gap with compassionate, structured, and inclusive support.
